Paving Scam Working In Hurricane Area

11/4/2011

The Hurricane Police Department has heard from two people in the area that they have been approached by drive by paving company. They have found several trucks in with Oregon plates. The trucks is registered out of Moab and New Mexico. No paving company has applied for a City business license.

Here is how the scams usually works: The scammer shows up at a random home and tells the resident they have "some extra blacktop" available "from another job" and will apply it to the driveway if the resident will pay for the work up front. Then, the scammer will either not do the work and takes off with the money, or they use a cheap grade of paving material followed by a demand for the resident pay an additional amount for the work.

Other clues to look for are:

  • They become intimidating
  • They typically target the elderly and know when older folks are home alone
  • They pressure people to agree to a job without an agreed-upon price or contract

If you have any information about these individuals please contact Sgt. Stacey Gubler at (435)635-9663

Fake Debt Collectors Threaten Utah Victims in Phony Phone Call Scam

6-1-2010

The Utah Division of Consumer Protection has issued a warning regarding a fake debt collection scam. Utah citizens are targeted by offshore scam artists using pre-paid cell phone numbers who give verbal threats that they are going to damage a person’s Social Security Number, file a lawsuit against them and other actions unless the victim sends them money.

Consumers are reminded not to give out personal account information, SSN numbers or other identifying information to strangers over the phone. Also, the Division is recommending that consumers not send any money through a wire transfer service unless the recipient is a trusted and known source.

If you have received a call similar to the one described above contact the Hurricane Police at (435) 635-9663 or the Utah Department of Commerce at 1-801-530-6601 to file a complaint. For more information on this warning, download the new release here. For more information on other consumer protection warnings visit the Division of Consumer Protection web site.
