In earlier years, the residents of Hurricane city began their Fourth of July Celebration with one or more dynamite blasts early in the morning. For many years this "tradition" was discontinued. Recognizing this to be one of the more unique traditions of Hurricane, and in an effort to return to earlier traditions, this year a simulated dynamite blast at 6:00AM will signal the "official" beginning of our Celebration. We invite everyone to come have a "blast" with us this year, and participate in activities scheduled throughout the day. We hope the simulated morning blast tradition will continue for many Fourth of July Celebrations in the future.
Come to the Hurricane Community Center and eat some great food while supporting the Hurricane Lions Club. Breakfast will be served early enough so that those who will be participating in the parade will be able to grab a bite to eat before lining up for the parade. Prices are $6 adults, $4 children, or $25 family. The breakfast will include a drink, pancakes, eggs, and sausage.
We will have lots of new and exciting entries in the parade this year. Boy Scouts will help carry the parade banners again, and thanks to the Rotary Club, American Flags will be handed out to those wearing Hurricane Patriotic T-shirts (on sale at the city office and Classic Sports) while supplies last. The Fourth of July Committee has selected our American Patriots and Young American Patriots to be recognized throughout the day, so watch for them!
If you are interested in entering in the parade, click HERE for a form you can print, fill out, and fax, email (volunteer@cityofhurricane.com), mail, or drop off to Volunteer Services at the Hurricane City Offices. There is no charge to enter, but consider the theme when designing your entry. For questions contact Samantha Hinton 635-2811 ext.106.
Following the parade, at approximately 9:25AM, the old elementary school bell will be rung for several minutes. This bell used to be rung to call children to school, call residents to church, and in time of fire or other emergencies. When the ringing stops, this will signal the start of the Flag Ceremony in front of the flag pole at the west entrance to the Community Center.
Bring the children and come join the fun at the community center for races and games. The games consisting of skill and carnival games will be run by volunteers. Punch cards will be available for purchase at $5.00 each. Each card will entitle the holder to play 10 games and earn tickets that can be exchanged for a variety of merchandise at the prize booth. A bounce house and slide will be available as well. Races will be run for all ages starting with the very young. Foot races, sack races, wheelbarrow, and three legged races will be enjoyed by all who are willing to participate.
Come join the tradition of a small town 4th celebration.
This event is back this year and co-sponsored by the Tri-State ATV Club. Bleachers will be set up in the empty lot just south of Stout Park at the Spilsbury Sports Complex. Anyone can watch this event for FREE so come on out as it should be fun for the entire family! The Rodeo will showcase the following events: obstacle course, barrel racing, pole bending, relay, and blind man. Participants can enter for FREE in the Adult or Pee Wee category the day of the event.
Sponsored by the Heritage Park Museum and the American Legion Auxilliary. This will be a special exhibit featuring local war memorabilia. The items will be on display in the pavilion behind the Heritage Park Musuem. Visiting the exhibit is a great way to honor the service of the many men and women currently in our military as well as those who served in the past. The military has been, and always will be, an important part of the history of America, protecting the freedom we exercise daily in this great country!
Free Swim is divided into two time slots: Noon to 2:30PM for Hurricane residents living south of State Street (SR9), and 3:00PM to 5:30 PM for Hurricane residents living north of SR9. There will be several special events planned during each session. They are as follows:
Treaure Hunt - for younger children, hunt for toys in the shallow end of the pool. For older children, dive for toys!
Watermelon Soccer - This speaks for itself! It's a lot of fun for older children and teenagers.
Biggest Splash Competition - Open to anyone and there will be prizes for the winners.
Coolest Trick Competition - New this year! Lifeguards will be judging tricks off the diving boards. There will be prizes for the winners for this event as well, and it should be a lot of fun!
This is the perfect way to get out of the sun and celebrate your patriotism in the cool air of the Fine Arts Building. This program will be full of many different types of patriotic performances and the American Patriots and Young American Patriots will be recognized as well.
Francis Marion from South Carolina, nicknamed the "Swamp Fox", was a military leader during the Revolutionary War. For those of you who have no fear with the strength and endurance to match, this is the event for you! The Swamp Fox Challenge is an obstacle course designed to include a variety of obstacles to be completed as fast as you can. It will be open to all ages (younger children will need to be accompanied by a parent).
Come on out and have some fun watching the first annual Little League North vs. South baseball tournament. It will feature Little League players selected to play on one of two teams. The North team (wearing blue uniforms) will represent players who live on the north side of State Route 9. The South team (wearing grey uniforms) will represent players who live on the south side of State Route 9. Come on out and cheer for your favorite player(s) as they compete for a special award.
During World War II, the WAVES were a division of the Navy and the WAC was a branch of the Army. They were made up entirely of women! Therefore, it seems appropriate that the two teams in this tournament are as well. Come on out and watch a great Little League softball game while cheering for the Navy or Army.
This is the biggest softball rivalry of the year between Hurricane and Laverkin. Come support your home team and cheer them on to victory!
If you have any questions about the tournament, contact Richard Hirschi (635-4102).
A group of Veterans, with the help of our American Patriots and Young American Patriots, will be performing a flag retirement ceremony. This is a great way to show respect for our American Flag.
What a great way to end a day of celebrating our Independence. No Fourth of July would be complete without fireworks! This is your chance to spread a blanket on the grass, enjoy the cool breeze, and enjoy the brilliant colors of the fireworks set against the night sky. In order to safely accommodate a larger, and even more spectacular show, the fireworks will be lauched from the same area as last year, near the water shop. Optimal viewing is still from the Spilsbury Sports Complex.
